We visit Christmas Markets in Bruges & Leiden!

Bruges:

Itโ€™s hard to imagine a more mesmerizing Christmas setting than the historic center of Bruges. Every winter, the cityโ€™s old town is transformed into a magical winter wonderland with sparkling lights and decorated Christmas trees against a backdrop of gingerbread-like houses. This postcard-worthy setting with its convivial atmosphere combined with Belgianโ€™s many culinary delights results in an incredible Christmas experience.

Theย Markt is Brugesโ€™ central square, framed by the grand Belfry of Bruges, the Provincial Palace and the iconic guild housesย withย stepped gables. Itโ€™s the gorgeous medieval decor for Brugesโ€™ main Christmas market featuring dozens of food and Christmas decorations chalet-like stalls. Itโ€™s a festive experience for all senses: the twinkling lights in the tall Christmas tree, the classic Christmas songs, the aroma ofย glรผhweinย (mulled wine) in the air and that cup of hot chocolate warming your hands.

Thereโ€™s a second Bruges Christmas market, in a more intimate setting. Itโ€™s located just a few minutes from the main Christmas market, at the Simon Stevin square adjacent to the main shopping street called Steenstraat. The rectangular square is symmetrically aligned with trees and Christmas stalls. Oh, how we love checking out the many Christmas decorations and handmade gifts with a delicious, warm Belgian waffle in hand.

Leiden:

There are only a few floating Christmas markets in Europe, and some say that the Leiden market is the best. The cozy attraction boasts nearly 90 stalls that sell various foods, warm drinks, and handcrafted items. Youโ€™ll also find a floating ice rink and a small stage with around-the-clock performances.

Visitors to Leidenโ€™s market can also enjoy a boat tour of the old canal. Itโ€™s no wonder this yearly affair was awarded the prize for the โ€œbest Christmas market in Europeโ€ in 2016.

I never thought I’d be into a group tour. I was a bit nervous about having enough personal space (I can’t talk to anyone in the mornings until I’ve had at least two cups of coffee). But, these guys are laid back, think of everything and fun to be with…if you want to hang with the. You don’t have to. You can hang on your own all day if you want to…but the people that go on their trips become your friends. I was surprised by all that. Great job guys!
