Did you know tourism can be applied to ALL 17 Sustainable Development Goals? That's right, tourism is a big deal! Moving forward as tourism recovers, tourist dependent destinations and communities should be implemented all 12 goals with sustainable tourism development. Let's dive into what the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) is doing with tourism and the SDGs.
UNWTO is responsible for the promotion of responsible, sustainable and universally accessible tourism geared towards the achievement of the universal 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
UNWTO offers leadership and support to the tourism sector in advancing knowledge and tourism policies worldwide, advocating for responsible tourism and promoting tourism as a driving force towards economic growth, inclusive development and environmental sustainability.
With a current membership of 156 countries, UNWTO encourages the implementation of the Global Code of Ethics in Tourism, in order to maximize tourism´s socio-economic contribution while minimizing its possible negative impacts.
Overall, with organizations like UNWTO and the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), they are both major role models in setting standards for sustainable tourism. The best thing we can do is become literate in the SDGs and recognize implementation of the goals for addressing problems and solutions with the tourism industry!
